The intestine naturally produces mucus to protect its lining and help stool pass. A small, occasional amount may not be unusual.
What to keep in mind
More noticeable or repeated mucus can occur with infections, inflammation, irritable bowel syndrome, and other conditions. It is not possible to determine the cause from appearance alone.
Arrange medical advice when mucus persists or appears with blood, fever, significant pain, ongoing diarrhea, dehydration, or unexplained weight loss.
