The Bristol Stool Scale groups stool into seven visual types, from separate hard pellets to entirely liquid stool. It gives patients and clinicians shared language for describing bowel movements.

What to keep in mind

Types 3 and 4 are commonly described as the easiest to pass. A single unusual result rarely tells the whole story: hydration, diet, medication, illness, stress, and routine can all affect appearance.

Patterns matter more than isolated events. Persistent changes, pain, fever, unexplained weight loss, black tarry stool, or visible blood warrant medical advice.
